"As a Pennsylvanian, I can only say that Pat Toomey’s election is secondary to the importance of Arlen Spector’s defeat. It’s a matter of hygiene. Spector elicits real loathing here among conservative’s, and rightly so."

.....This reminded me of that comment by the Oswald Mosley type character in "The Remains of the Day." It also confirms my belief that movement conservatives in PA absolutely hate the guy. I know one and he sounds very like Gordianus on the subject. I just don't see how he makes it through the primary. I hear he's started a campaign to get Dem transferees to switch back to the GOP but I don't see that having much impact. A few weeks back there was talk he might have switched parties and this really would have been his best move. He's a big pal of Rendell's who would have smoothed his path, after all he's got no more than one more term ahead of him, and he'd have romped home. Now he has the worst of all worlds.

Toomey is electoral poison on any number of counts: economic policy, Iraq and social issues. The democrats have a deep bench and can field several candidates like Sestak who could soundly beat him. They can also soundly beat Spector and will if the economy is showing signs of recovery. Spector is doomed imho. I don't think he's even going to make it through the primary. He only narrowly beat Toomey last time and is absolutely loathed by movement conservatives in PA who are now the only people left in the PA Republican party which has lost some 200,000 registrants to the Dems or independants.

I sense volatility in the electorate in general. While Frum has no idea what will happen, I doubt anyone else has either. So much depends on what happens in the intervening months. Quakers are a real factor in my area and a continuation of Bush's wars will only dampen their enthusiasm. On the other hand, a large Jewish influx into the New Jersey and beyond into the Philadelphia suburbs helps Spector.

If it looks like the economy is failing and Toomey can portray himself as a sound money, small business conservative he has a chance. But you are right; he must renounce the war and the neo-con linkage. I wonder if he can.
