TGGP:

"Tammany-style clericalism"

Factions of rabbis who extort public subsidies and legislation (draft exemptions, Sabbath prohibitions, control of marriage and conversions) in exchange for lending their 3 or 4 votes to a shaky coalition.

Refers to "Tammany Hall," the ancient Democratic machine that once ruled New York City (Boss Tweed: "Let us prey").

Tammany-style clericalism
What?

Gilder's daughter has a bloggingheads diavlog here. It's about quantum entanglement though (I guess having a creationist dad didn't screw her up too much).

Always a bad sign, equating disagreement with one's enthusiasms with a mental condition. It's like the old "F Scale," defining right of center thought as Fascism.

If Gilder does half so well in defending Israel as he did the American Spectator, the Israelis need to be afraid, very afraid.

This is goofy stuff. In her early days, Israel claimed to be socialist in a way, what with its phylansteries (kibbutzim) and informality.

Just as DC combines Southern efficiency and Northern charm, Israel manages to join the bureaucracy and inefficiency of socialism with the inequality and vulgarity of modern capitalism. You can add Tammany-style clericalism to the mix.

The Israelis have accomplished many things against great odds, but support for Israel is a test of nothing much, except the ability to shrug off human-rights abuses, and, for American politicians, their degree of subservience to a well-organized, well-funded and incessantly active pressure group.
