Never heard of this guy until last week. I wasn't surprised at the Marty Peretz of the world but I found no lack of non-Zionist non-Jews who have their issues with him for this particular role.

AIPAC conspiracy or no there were reasons enough not for him to have veto rights over middle east NIEs. An ambassadorship or something else solely relationship based, sure. But what I learned didn't fill me with any great confidence he would excel at overseeing objective intelligence analysis. I came away with the impression he'd be prepping up for the next time the door revolved.

Sometimes it really is a fire throwing that smoke.

Freeman is out.

Apparently the Zionist lobby continues to be an effective veto group on matters that concern it in this country.

Everyone in politics must know this fact to survive, but those who mention the fact critically are branded anti-semites.

We have other ethnic lobbies, influential if less so than the Zionists--Cuban, East Indian, Armenian, Greek, and Irish for starters. None of the others, at the moment, is plumping for another aggressive war, as some of the more extreme Zionists are for war against Iran.

It's this kind of absurdity that gives Israel and its leadership a miraculous amount of immunity, and which, to a very large extent, inflates their own worth vis a vis other countries. I can't remember what book it was, where meetings between Clinton and Netanyahu were comically one-sided, with "Benni" as they called him later, dictating terms and issues to the American's as IF America wasn't propping Israel up, both financially and diplomatically through the UN Security Council.

In the long run its hard to imagine how, exactly, Israel plans to solve its constant sense of crisis by appealing to its equivalents of American neo-cons. And despite the oft-lauded history of the IDF, its not especially apparent how it plans to "bomb for peace" in either Lebanon or elsewhere.

Daniel, these challenges to credibility are exactly what is sinking the GOP even as we speak. No ideas, no credibility, no leadership. If the nation were not best served by an active and capable opposition, I'd say the party should just pack it in and call it a day.

As it is, the best thing that could happen to this nation is for the GOP to find something to stand for, rather than against. Nothing in it it's current platform is going to resonate with the public for years to come.

The nature of the opposition to Freeman is symptomatic of the intellectual and ethical void that the GOP has become. Talk about your chickens coming home to roost!
