[...] At any rate, better start scrubbing your websites, Republicans, or pretty soon there will be some Silly Putty or you will be blacklisted for pointing out that Jindal really and truly sucked last night. [...]

Obama's effort wasn't great oratory. Certainly no shades of Lincoln or Churchill but that wasn't the role he was playing last night. He was the family lawyer explaining to the feckless family members (think of the WSJ Bancrofts) that because of their overspending, incompetent management and investment choices the family firm was on the rocks. He'd got a plan to get it off, it was going to cost a lot, it was going to involve some leaps of faith with new products, he'd hired new managers, it wasn't going to be easy but he thought it had a good chance of success. And the family bought it both because of the superb poise and confidence he brought to explaining it but also because on the whole it sounded adult and grounded in reality. The subsequent carping by a rather geeky family nephew was dismissed as essentially silly and juvenile. I've been saying here for months as has Daniel that the GOP has no idea what they are dealing with in Obama and shows no signs of wanting to learn. Their only policy seems to placing a bet against the American people which I think they are going to lose.

The takeaway, and the only thing I remember well enough to quote, is this: "Republicans went along with earmarks and big government spending."

Jindal and GOP: The first step in repenting of irresponsibility is to take responsibility for your mistakes. "The Devil made me do it," is not repentance and makes you look the fool.

Ron Paul should have been the one giving the counter-SOTU speech.

My reaction was similar to yours; however, I missed that this might have been a do-over of Jindal's planned convention speech. Good insight. This would have been entirely appropriate there, but was simply dreadful in the current context. Gustav claiming another victim indeed. Especially given that this could have been a great place for Jindal and the Republicans to seize some of the initiative on the issue about which he has the greatest competence - health care. A clear missed opportunity.

I believe that this response will diminish Jindal's prospects for 2012 in a non-trivial fashion. For someone frequently called the Republicans' answer to Obama to deliver a widely panned, wooden address in his first big public forum has to hurt - the primacy effect in human memory (better relative recall of early events) is huge. This first impression will take real effort to live down, especially among the pundits.
