It never ceases to amaze me that nobody considered this rather obvious prerequisite prior to actually invading Iraq.  To assume democracy can simply take root in whatever soil it falls upon is ludicrous.  And beyond that, to have such unbounded faith in democracy itself as to think that within it lies the cure to whatever despotic malady afflicts whatever region of the globe...it is beyond comprehension.

Then again, democracy promotion aligns itself so neatly with globalism and free trade and hegemony, it becomes itself a sort of American necessity.  Our patriotism, it seems, is not pure enough if it ends at our own borders....</description>
