Singling out Germany is always convenient for the outrage mongers. It's another convenient way for Anglo-Saxons to feel good about themselves. In fact the only real difference between what the Germans did in Eastern Europe and the Brits, French, Spanish et al did in Africa and the Americas is that the Germans started two or three centuries late and killed white people instead of brown people. Hitler was very consciously trying to replicate in Eastern Europe what the English did in North America - kill the natives and take their land. The hypocrisy of Anglo-Saxons, and those who have assimilated to Anglo-Saxon culture, never ceases to amaze.

The reason Gerson postures this way is that it makes him feel so good. There is a long history of Western bloviating about Africa which is not really about Africa but about the White Man feeling compassionate and caring. The same thing can be accomplished, more cheaply, by getting a puppy. I wonder if Gerson has ever heard of or read Kenyan writer Binyavanga Wainaina's brilliant "How to Write About Africa" in the Winter 2005 issue of Granta: "whichever angle you take, be sure to leave the strong impression that without your intervention and important book, Africa is doomed."
