No, but, shockingly, they've managed to make themselves more loathesome by doing something they should have done a long time ago.

They've made a vice of a virtue.

But were any of these people more admirable when they were full-throatedly backing Bush in no less a self-serving fashion?

Mark Steyn cites a rather interesting column by Christopher Buckley pushing McCain on conservatives:

www.nytimes.com/2008/02/19/opinion/19buckley.html?_r=2&oref=slogin&oref=slogin

Most of the arguments are the sort that we've heard a million times or two from squishes, full of strawmen and glaring omissions.

I can understand the desire of people like Steyn and Levin to defend McCain. Despite their reservations, they made a commitment to the man and their party. Having done that, you stick to it until election day, unless, of course, he does something inexcusable. The only thing McCain is guilty of is being an incompetent campaigner. So in this, I'll give them credit. It would be easier to say I told you so and walk away from the mess, and they haven't (yet) succumbed to that temptation.

As for the latest batch of dissenters, they are utterly repulsive and self-serving, even when they make a good point or two.
