So long as he can't just speak honestly in criticizing Israel, then the sore will continue to fester. And the sore is not Israel's existence. The sore is the war with the Palestinians, the galvinzation of Islamic and Arab resolve, the billions of US dollars, the misguided US wars to defend Israel from its long-term enemies, the friction with oil-producing states, the double standards on issues of self-determination, US involvement, the importance of treaties and borders, etc.

Obama's nothing special; he continues to genuflect before Israel, as if our continued involvement in the region is a good thing, where instead it's the biggest driver of continuation of the conflict and legitimate conflation of US and Israeli actions, intentions, and moral responsibility.

The criticism levelled against Obama is the right-wing (neo-con?) version of the old "codewords"/"dogwhistle" thing the left trots out to indict conservatives of racism or religious extremism...

Say the words "wound" and "sore" and "infection" in the context of Israel and this is what will happen every time. Defenders of Israel will think you're giving the old wink wink nudge nudge to the anti-semites and arab extremists...

And, it's no more justified here than in the other context...

The thing that interests me though, is that the bolded senetence is quintessential Obama: it means nothing. Providing an excuse for inexcusable actions... The settlements are not helpful... What?

This ugly, intentional misunderstanding of Obama's words and intentions by the usual suspects on the right could almost induce a sympathy vote for Obama.

Almost.

Still, absolutely disgusting.
