What, exactly, is the difference between initiating a war and supporting its execution? Yes, the southerners and the Scotts-Irish haven't been the movers and shakers who get us into wars, if only because they haven't been movers and shakers at all. But since their support for virtually any war we get into can be counted upon as surely as the sun rising in the east, can't we pretty much say that they are just as responsible for our involvement in foreign wars as any of the "elites"? If the elites couldn't count on their support, but faced actual opposition from them, wouldn't this prevent many such wars from ever being initiated? While they may not be in the drivers seat of the American War Machine, they are certainly a big part of the engine that makes it run.
