You know whenever I hear Bush or one another pro-war idiot talk about how much more 'free' the Iraqis are now it makes me want to puke. Even under the authoritarian rule of Saddam you could legally own automatic weapons, in Baghdad no less (cannot say that for our capital, where pretty much they are all illegal). Not only does the 'democratic' state of Iraqi want to disarm everyone, but abortion was also legalized - proof, in my mind, that pro-war Evangelicals dont care about the Iraqis

The last comment was just silliness, of course.

The recent events show the degeneration of the strategy in Iraq. We are now providing air support for the most pro-Iranian of the Shi'ia factiions, against the one most identified with Iraqi nationhood, such as it is, the one most likely to reconcile with the Sunnis, in spite of its sorry record of ethnic cleansing.

Apparently we've chosen a horse to ride, and it's a swaybacked old jade. This adventure has nothing to do with Al Qaida, WMD, democratization, or fighting tyranny, the expressed purposes of the invasion. Which side of the intra-Shi'ite squabble Exxon is on, I have no idea.

The only question may be how much worse it's going to get, and whether it will go completely awry before or after November.
