"More worrying to me now is the possibility that Obama’s candidacy, which has been so often compared to a souffle, will collapse for one reason or another and drag down the public’s opposition to the war with it."

Those political atmospherics that you (justly) pan will go a long way to doing this. A lot of casual voters will simply reaquaint themselves with McCain's military biography, find out that he has one son in Iraq, another at Annapolis and likely on the way to Iraq and conclude that they might not much like the Iraq war, but will be pretty comfortable having McCain in charge of it. As I've said before,

I guess I would agree with you on all your points if we were talking Romney or Huckabee. I could convince myself that these guys are going to, in the end, try a different path.

But with McCain I can't see that at all. McCain seems to be a 110% Bush Kool-aid drinker that provides no hope of anything but four more yeas of Bush double-plus-good.

Still I will listen to all your discussion of Obama. Maybe you will scare me enough to consider McCain, but I doubt it.

On scale alone, the Humanitarian wars just don't seem to be as costly, deadly or sticky We seem to be able to get out relatively quickly if it goes bad and the UN is much more willing to step in on these humanitarian missions as well.

Well, if we have to go, I propose liberating the South African minority. They’ve suffered enough.

Or perhaps a mission to the Gaza strip? There certainly is a Humanitarian disaster going on there.

We've got the amateur versus the psychopath. Wonderful.

My question for Obama is where would he be on these silly "humanitarian" wars we keep finding ourselves in: Somalia, Kosovo, Haiti, and proposed wars in Sudan. These have a tendency to always prop up because something horrible is always happening to some hapless minority somewhere.
