		<description>I think the idea of faction needs to be more clearly separated from that of political groupings.  Political groupings are not inherently factional, though they almost always tend to be coopted to a greater or lesser extent by factions.  The ideal of English politics was always to have vigorous political debate on the basis of differing ideas of the common good, rather than appeals to particular interests or group identities- i.e. factionalism.

On a side note, while I agree with Daniel about the narrow division between the Democrats and Republicans, note how much narrower the division is in most other western nations.</description>
