The reader says the corn came from his neighbor’s garden.

This is the 50th VFYT, by the way. These last few VFYTs are a perfect example of what this feature should be: putting food in a context. It doesn’t have to be a grand context (we can’t always eat in visually stunning locales), but ideally, the images should give us some information — landscape, social, aesthetic — beyond what’s being eaten.

I started doing this for something fun and light, but it’s turned out that some days these VFYTs are my favorite posts of all.

Wow, I’d sure call that visually stunning! Or maybe stunning is the wrong word. It’s so lush and beautiful — more soothing than stunning. What a gorgeous back yard!

Isn’t it, though? That’s southern Louisiana at this time of year. It looks a lot like that where I live right now. But the air is so wet and heavy! It’s the subtropics, baby…

This kind of thing could turn into a Tumblr picture blog, and if successful there, a real book. It’s happened before. I’ve had this idea to take photos of abandoned gas stations and/or crumbling barns every time I drive on rural highways, and make some kind of online picture repository, but I can’t begin to justify actually spending the time on it. Maybe I need crowdsource the field work.

You know, this is probably how my mother-in-law remembers the Haiti of her childhood in the countryside there, where her father owned land. It used to be a lush, green and forested tropical landscape. She nearly cries to remember it because it is all but gone. If this is anything like what she is crying for, I understand her sorrow.
