Now, that’s a “View FROM My Table”!

Excuse me, I meany YOUR table.

If your table was in Sweeden, I’d be wondering where the boiled potatoes were, since that was THE staple side dish back when I visited the country as a boy nearly 40 years ago.

Beautiful setting in Norway – wine, food, boats and water. All good things. Not a drop of Scandinavian blood in me, though I love that world. And its literature has much that is great aside from contemporary murder mysteries – though some of those are excellent First of all there is Sigrid Undset, Nobel prize winner and author of “Kristin Lavransdatter” and “The Master of Hestviken.” More recently there is Per Olov Enquist, whose novel on the life of Johann Friedrich Struensee, “The Royal Physician’s Visit” won much acclaim and is a most notable story. Also his “Lewi’s Journey” is excellent. Let us not forget Henrik Ibsen, great playwright. There are many others as well. And I would also include the Norwegian-American author of the little known masterpiece of pioneer literature, “Giants In the Earth,” O.E. Rolvaag. Read, Read!

Man, that’s beautiful…
Regrettably, I only think of Scandinavia through the prism of murder mysteries. Thus, I’m confident that the water is thick with bodies; the shed contains a sniper and the meat comes from something that, in better times, could speak.
