Fred, our Paris bureau chief, sends this from his Bastille Day dinner in a Chinese restaurant near St-Eustache. I arrived at the end of the evening shocked that I had forgotten to take any photos of the dinner Julie and I made for our guests. We had baked goat cheese on salad, pan-fried chicken in a red wine vinegar and herb sauce, carrots in pesto, tomatoes Provençal, asparagus in sage butter, and baguettes. We drank French rosé, and then an Alsatian Riesling. For dessert, coffee, Mariage Frères tea, and a Breton cake with a sauce made of figs picked today from our tree in the backyard and cooked down in Meyer lemon syrup Julie made earlier this year from a friend’s harvest.

It was a good dinner, and Fred was remembered fondly, as was dear old Gaul.
