My friend Marnix and his young daughter Isa came by to pick me up this afternoon, and we walked down the street to the Cafe t’Smalle, owned by a friend of his. I had a glass of Trappist-style beer from Amsterdam’s organic craft brewery; Isa had a slice of appelgebak met slagroom (apple tart with whipped cream). Old English pubs and Amsterdam’s brown cafes are my idea of the happiest places on earth. If you ever find yourself in the Jordaan neighborhood of Amsterdam, look for this place. You’ll be so happy you did.
