Yup — scalloped potatoes. I’m sure the extra steps of par-cooking the spuds in some garlic infused milk, etc, makes ‘em better, but what your looking at is one of the ways my mom kept five kids fed when we didn’t have a lot of money.

I’m seriously confused by the Central Market juice – Texas? – and the card that appears to be from DC’s Dominican House of Studies. All this in Worcester, MA?

James C, the guy who has previously sent those great VFYT photos from Boston?
I live in Philly now, however I grew up in New England and do miss it. Go Pats!

Dauphinoise – James C. is the chef!
BTW, that pretty boy quarterback jilted a more beautiful woman, Bridget Moynahan, for that Brazilian Bündchen broad. Bad cess [*] to the “Patriots”.
[*] Irish dialect for “bad luck”. I lived in a couple of Irish neighborhoods. God bless the Irish and Bridget Moynahan as well. She’s well rid of Tommy the tomcat.

DC,
Good eye! I was visiting my friend, who is a Ph.D student in Worcester but plans to join the Dominicans after he is finished. That holy card, as I’m sure you know, is a reproduction of a huge mural on the wall of the refectory in the DHS in Washington.
I basically do variations on Julia Child’s recipe as found in her Mastering the Art of French Cooking. It’s one of the simplest you could find—it only took me about 15 minutes of prep and 20-30 minutes of cooking time.

James C., I do know the mural. I live in the DC area. I will invite some Dominicans over and prepare the gratin for us. Thanks!

@dl
Central Market is the house brand of Price Chopper, a local grocery chain. The chain used to be called Central Market, until some idiot apparently thought that “Price Chopper” sounded better.

Actually that green salad is what looked scrumptious to me.

Thanks, Nathaniel W. Central Market is the upscale version of the HEB grocery stores in Texas, where I used to live.

I hate New England and that pretty boy quarterback right now.
