   I just recently learned about the foodie scene in Frederick. I guess it shouldn’t surprise since it is maybe 40 minutes from DC and a good sized town with a lot to recommend it.

   It is also where I went to high school and where I spent a lot of time growing up. Just to think, when I was growing up we used to call the place “Fredneck.” Its hard for me to imagine what it must be like now to be a foodie in one of my all time favorite places. Makes me even more proud of it (as long as it doesn’t get too big for its britches that is )

   “Tasting” appears to be the operative word.

   Two ounces of venison, one ounce of pasta/veg and two ounces of wine. The venison looks delicious though.

   Heh. There’s still the Fredneck element, keeping us from getting TOO cocky. We’re both foodie, but there’s a down to earth element to us too. Frederick is my adopted home town.

   My house is about 20 minutes west of town. Less than a 5 minute drive away is an amazing coffee shop in an old church called Beans in the Belfry. I sent a picture from there a while back, which was posted in VFYT. It’s one of these old eastern company towns that has seen better days. And yet, there’s this foodie type place that serves coffee, some bottled craft beer, things like Thai Lemongrass Soup and Bombay Pitas (both REALLY GOOD), and so on. It’s an amazing place – the type of place that doesn’t seem like it should exist. Why is this arty place in downtown Brunswick MD? But I love that they’ve embraced their role as a community center – they have local political debates and meetings there. It has the feeling of an English pub, with the idea that people go there to meet, get the latest info, and so on.

   If your correspondent is still in town, go check out Brian Voltaggio’s Family Meal, which is not far from the downtown. It’s a place I’d like to do another VFYT at some point. They set up shop in an abandoned car dealership, and it looks like an upscale diner. They make amazing chicken pot pie fritters, and the fried chicken is MMMMMMM MMMMMMM. You can buy fries made from duck fat, and they bring out amazing dipping sauces. I haven’t had something I didn’t like there yet. And it’s a lot cheaper than Volt (not that expensive is bad, but you can’t eat at Volt every night for a week!).

   Brewer’s Alley also has some good food, and brews their own beer (with a name like Brewer’s Alley, one would hope that’s the case). And there’s a small pretzel bakery that makes pretzels and pizza with pretzel crusts. Lots of fun stuff in Frederick.

   Ah yes, Frederick. One of the many towns made rich by the obscene expansion of our national government and its suctioning of trillions of dollars of taxes and printing trillions more in debt notes. The foodies of Frederick should enjoy the largesse enabled by this theft while while they can. I’m sure there were some towns near Rome that had good wine, cheese and venison.

   Well, not to be negative, but that looks more like an appetizer than a main course. And it probably costs a fortune. I see their four-course is $80.00; the wine-pairer is $95.00 (seven courses) plus the wine!

   Now, I do agree that we do oversize pretty much everything in this country, but why do ‘fine’ restaurants seem to think the portions need to be smaller at the same level that the price increases?

   And my peeve on menus is that there is *always* a typo—Kennebec does not use a *k* at the end. At least not in Maine, the home of Kennebec potatoes.

   I would point out that this is the smallest portion I’ve ever seen Volt provide. Which makes sense: I think full service, multi course meals are booked several months in advance.

   And yes, Frederick is all making money illegitimately and whatever nonsense you are saying. That’s all that’s going in here, apparently.
