This is a groom’s cake fashioned to look like a Louisiana crawfish boil. Says the reader:
From my brother-in-law’s wedding in Mobile, AL last Saturday. The crawfish, potatoes, corn and even the tongs are made of icing and can be picked up separately from the chocolate cake itself. Now how ’bout dat, cher?
I agree, that’s a pretty amazing gateau. Who made this cake, anyway?
David J. White says: Sorry, what is a “groom’s cake”? Is that a Southern thing?
Nancy Wang says: David, maybe it is a Southern thing. They always have them at weddings where I’m from. It’s just a smaller cake that represents the groom, something he likes, etc., separate from the big white traditional wedding cake.

David, a groom’s cake is a gift from the bride. It is so common where I’m from ( Southeast Texas) that I didn’t know that it was a southern thing until you asked. But yes, according to wikipedia, it is Southern.
David J. White says: OK, thanks. I’ve never seen them at weddings in Ohio, where I’m from, or in the NY-Philadelphia area (where I lived for awhile and went to several weddings). I was married in Florida, but of course, except for the northern third, Florida isn’t really Southern. I live in central Texas now, but I have been to only a couple of weddings here, and I don’t recall seeing a second cake. Interesting.
alcogito says: Fiddle. Our whole family has been in the NW for 150+ years and we always have groom’s cakes at weddings. Never so much of a muchness as that one though. That’s amazing.
Love it. I don’t know if you saw, but LSU just lost to Florida. It may not be such big news over in France!
