That was part of the spread at the Memorial Day event I went to way out in the country. Three cheers for our generous hosts! What did you eat today? Here’s one of the things we drank; it’s really good, and everybody here in south Louisiana is crazy for it. I saw a friend in Natchitoches in from Dallas who said she had been searching all over Big D for the stuff:

Russell Fox says: I have a friend in Dallas who once, basically for the hell of it, set up a system to taste-test over 200 different root beers. Abita beat them all, hands down. All of their stuff is great.
EliasInDallas says: I have to give a disapproving shake of my head at the thought of drinking a Strawberry Lager Beer. Actually, I guess since the word “beer” is nowhere on that bottle that it probably doesn’t even meet the minimum requirements of beer (hops, barley, fermented with yeast). So I guess it gets a pass…
We had a bunch of people from Church over to break in our new house. I grilled beer Bratwurst and made german potato salad. Served with some carmalized onions (I cooked them for well over an hour beforehand, low and slow), sauerkraut, and grainy mustard. Also, with my homebrewed Amber Rye Ale and Malted Hard Cider on tap from the kegerator. Finished off the evening with vodka recommended (and indirectly supplied) by a certain subdeacon we both know and love.
Saint_Hubbins says: Abita Strawberry is good. Covington Strawberry is better. Do not subject yourself to the Abita Satsuma ale, which is a disgrace to its namesake fruit.

Those of you hating on fruit beer ever had a nice Belgian kriek? Or New Glarus’ Belgian Red or Raspberry Tart? I’m as beer snobbish as they come, but I like the odd glass of them. No more than an 8 ounce glass or so, though.

We had an early afternoon meal with neighbors. Top of the menu: grass fed steak, grilled medium rare. Meal rounded out with chicken bratwurst, shrimp skewers, kale salad, sourdough bread with fresh garlic butter, a couple other salads, watermelon, cheesecake sampler, strawberries, and vanilla ice cream.
