Clive Crook is sick and tired of the US haranguing the UK about yielding even more of its sovereignty to the EU:

I think Britain should call on the US and its partners to start recasting NAFTA as a full monetary and political union. Be visionary, for heaven’s sake. Put the Federal Reserve in Mexico City as a measure of good faith. Europe would benefit if North America were unified, speaking with a single voice, and focused on shared interests around the world and in the region. Also, it would be so much easier for Europe to deal with one government in North America instead of three.

What’s that? It’s not so simple? No, it isn’t.

Reading the article, it sounds like the US is somewhat perturbed about EU-skepticism out of the UK, and the suggestion that the Brits ought to pull out; not that the US is concerned that the UK will “yield even more of its sovereignty” to Brussels.

It would be nice if our own federal government delegated a great deal more authority back to the states. The feds have become an EU of sorts.

Careful reflection and a fairly deep knowledge of European history–and US-European relations–led me to conclude that the European Union is permanent solution to 20th century problems that have passed. I can see why post-1945 observers saw it as both a noble dream and a practical way to fix the political firetrap Europe had become after World War I. But the dynamics that cause the problem have passed, as did the Cold War division of “Europe” that made a more deeply integrated Europe seem workable. What we now have is an effort to make the theory fit the facts. It says a lot about those who make and write about foreign policy that they actually see it as both workable and a good thing. None of what it says is very good.

I would strongly recommend this blog to you Rod – lindleyfrench.blogspot.com Julian Lindley French is a Brit expert on the transatlantic alliance – very respected fellow who is much agitated about EU happenings. His blog is most informative.

I do think we are utterly failing to see what a disaster the EU has become and the disastrous consequences of the EU’s failures. The cynicism of the Eurocrats in using a financial disaster as a means to force political union is mindboggling when one considers the suffering of so many Europeans.
Especially since political union won’t solve the financial problem.

The Brits no longer benefit from the EU and have other options. We should back off on this one. What especially disturbs me – if the west will not fight to preserve democratic states – who will? I say good for the Brits – at least they have a willingness to preserve the rights their foreparents fought and often died to earn.
