Sorry I meant to post this YouTube link to the crazy Russian acrobats on the extremely high radio tower:

Those wing-suit videos are fun to watch as long as everything goes well. There’s a video of Jeb Corliss in a wing-suits smacking into Table mountain at high speed which is stomach churning. He was lucky because it was a glancing blow and he retained consciousness to deploy his parachute. However he was in the hospital for quite a while with multiple broken bones.
Yes. Yes, she is both beautiful and cooler than I. Shared this with my sons; may it inspire them.
Jeb Corliss is Roberta’s boyfriend, isn’t he?
Sorry, Rod, but the title the sexiest woman on the planet belongs to another Italian, 78-year-old Sophia Loren. In an interview I read that she credits her good looks and incredible figure to getting lots of sleep and eating lots of pasta. She said she doesn’t exercise much.
Carol, I just Googled that and you are correct. They are equally crazy and I hope they’re happy together. I just hope they don’t have kids because it just seems like a matter of time until they’re orphaned.
Interesting conversation to be had here about the intersection between risk-taking and attractiveness. When does something go from stupid to stylish? The short answer is, “When an Italian fashion model does it.”
Still, we live in an increasingly risk-averse culture. The dudes from Jackass or the kids from Buckwild are seen as foolish and piggish and hideous. It’s so wasteful to take such risks. Smoking isn’t evil because it interferes with anyone elses preferences. No. See… it’s about safety and how much we want people to protect themselves. Only an idiot would go four seconds without health insurance, and if they try, the state must intervene. Anyone carrying an extra 20 pounds needs an interventi0on for their own darn good. No big gulps for you!
And yet, at some level, we all know that there is something intrinsically and inescapably attractive about a fist fight, or a model jumping off a cliff, or racing a car or inhaling carcinogens.
She must be the most intimidating woman to hit on at a bar.
Me: “So, do you come here often?”
Her: “I jump off mountains often.”
Me: “That’s cool. I play three-par golf courses pretty regularly. I apologize for trying to hit on you.”
How do you know she isn’t a secret agent? It’s the perfect cover.
Regarding the risk-adverse nature of culture: is this a feature or a bug, at least when viewed through a traditionalist conservative lens?
Sam, I agree that we are generally risk-averse as a culture. My entire family rock climbs, and more people respond with “you are crazy!” than respond with “wow, that is cool.” I don’t feel, however, that those with the former response are judging me or my wife because of what we let our kids do.
Related, there is a fascinating bit of a climbing video (the name escapes me) about the Whittaker family in England. The kids (Katy and Pete) are out doing cutting edge, dangerous gritstone routes, and their parents are out there with them, belaying (such that it is during those particular endeavors). Video of Pete is here, and here’s a good video of the consequences of these sorts of routes.
More craziness from Russia:
Fearless…gorgeous…American of Scotch/Irish descent…that’s my wife. She lead the way on our weekend snowshoeing excursion at Hurricane Ridge in Washington state’s Olympic National Park. They have a web cam if anyone is interested in checking out the views.
When I read the term “fearless” my first reflex is to offer M-4 (or AK-74) and a free trip to the mountains of Afghanistan (or Caucasus). I knew and know some combat veterans who did some amazing things in battle (and in other “adverse” conditions) but who would sh.t their pants (I, certainly, would) when offered to do what this girl does, so, my guess is–yes, she is cooler. But I would rather stick with my friends and their judgments, though. As for being gorgeous–the girl is attractive, no doubt about it, but it takes slightly more than just that to be truly loved in this oversexed world of ours.

Let your kids smoke, or bottle feed them. The response would be different.
Some risks we like. Some we don’t like. And the level of riskiness does not always correlate with the approval/disapproval. I suspect that the people who let their kids rock-climb might get less flack than the familes that don’t breastfeed.
SWPL include models who jump off mountains. While it’s not universal by any means, I know a lot of men who find women who smoke attractive. Not sure if anyone is turned on by bottle-feeding, but it takes all kinds. There’s that memoirist who likes cowboys. Etc.
More craziness
This is precisely what it is–craziness and it is all cool and wonderful until one has to do (in a better case scenario) a reconstructive surgery on…whatever. Good thing if they will kill just themselves and not take someone else with them.
Sam, good points. I also think that there’s a difference between stupidity and measured risk. That is, jumping in a shopping cart and careening down a mountain road (a la Jackass) strikes me as terribly stupid, but when I climb, much of what I do is actually about mitigating risk. Yes, I’m still pushing the proverbial boat out when I climb, but I do what I can to control the situation and minimize certain aspects of the risk.
To circle back to the subject at hand, Ms. Mancino isn’t stupid or crazy–yes, she’s taking risks when base-jumping, but she’s likely crossed her Ts and dotted her Is to make the situation as safe as possible.
Predictions, not necessarily in order:
1. I, Roberta Mancino
2. Nobel Peace Prize
Roberta is cooler than I . I kite surf and kite buggy witch I pritty tame compared to flying in wing suits ! But we all risk asses our lives every day from crossing the road to getting in the car ; what it boils down to is what you choose to do with your life , what risks are you willing to take and what can you achive its your choice what you do with your life ! Roberta choises are what make her cool and also gives her freedom ! All you sheep should try some time but its your life !
Freedom comes from being able to take risk people like Roberta are truly beautiful and are moving the human race forward !
what it boils down to is what you choose to do with your life , what risks are you willing to take and what can you achive its your choice what you do with your life
Sure, it is all about looking cool and doing “risky” stuff. Once you bungee jump new meaning of life reveals itself, I am pretty sure. How about it boils down to being a real human first and foremost and then thinking about what to do with one’s life in terms of base-jumping, hiking or parachuting?? There are people out there (in fact a huge number) who never got to look cool and “do” something with their lives like….looking cool, but who, without any publicity, silently live lives full of true heroism and real cool–be it a single parent busting own butt to get his-her kids good education and upbringing, working two-three jobs, or some obscure veteran, who skipped on being praised left and right for the selfish sake of those praising, and who did some amazing stuff which will never see any publicity. I was a witness to a true human greatness in a face of the terminal illness, when people continued to do their duty despite being doomed–that’s what they chose to do with their lives, what’s left of them anyway. That is real guts.
Freedom comes from being able to take risk people like Roberta are truly beautiful and are moving the human race forward !
Sure she moves human race forward, as any cute celebrity does in this culture of ours, which is nothing more than one long commercial, especially publicizing the life style which has a pretty narrow target audience. Meanwhile, those pesky everyday professionals, you know those doctors, firefighters, engineers, nurses and even jazz saxophonists (damn, I am really close to cool on that one) they just sleep and dream on how to put humanity of the path backwards. But then again, without knowing the meaning of “moving forward” this whole discussion is pointless, isn’t it? As for taking the risks…I guess some firefighters or Coast Guard rescue people (among many others) will have a very specific opinion about that and it will differ drastically from yours.
The camera work is visually cool, but other than than…
Andrew sorry if my option upset you you obviously got something bigger than sports and fashion on your mind . I pritty sure you missed my point . The point I was trying to make is people like Jeb and Roberta are rare as they step out from the crowd from the normal and do something better .On top of dealing with normal life/death . There are people like them in many other fields doing fanatics things for us ! And that was the beauty I was referring to . Roberta and Jeb are not run of the mill celebs they are tip of sord when it comes to there sport and they moving it forward. I hope you understand what I was trying to say ! But I sure you will disect this too and make something great and beautiful sound worthless and crass .
I hope you can see what I have seen in Roberta and Jeb and use it like I have to give me strength when facing adverserity !
“Why is this woman not a secret agent?”
How do you know she’s not?
She probably is a secret agent. As for being cooler than I. That’s not saying much — Most of the planet is cooler than me — especially Italians.
Yeah, I bow to Roberta Mancino, she is cooler than I am. But she is not as cool (or as insane) as these Russian kids on the extremely high radio tower: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=lg706TvkcyQ#/watch?v=lg706TvkcyQ
