That’s an image from the back garden of Cecil Lapeyrouse Grocery, here in Cocodrie. It’s been there for 99 years. The Lapeyrouses don’t leave when hurricanes come. Their house is built on stilts, and they sit tight and ride ’em out. This shot shows one thing I love about Cajun Catholic culture: bathtub grottos for the Blessed Virgin Mary. When I was a child, we would drive to Grand Isle, here on the Louisiana coast, every couple of years, and we’d drive by houses that had a half-buried bathtub with a statue of the Virgin Mary in it. I was mystified and entranced. I love seeing these things.
