A reader sent this op-ed piece from yesterday’s Washington Post as an example of the mindset of many liberals with regard to the Hobby Lobby controversy. The author, a former federal employee named Loren Clark-Moe, says:

I’ve been on the pill for most of my adult life, and I’ve always had irregular menstruation, routinely going three or four months without a period. That’s why I didn’t worry when I missed a period last fall. It wasn’t until I began to suffer extreme nausea and fatigue that I began to think something was wrong. A home pregnancy test on a Thursday night led to phone calls Friday morning and then a quickly scheduled doctor’s appointment for Monday.

She was, of course, pregnant. (Note that she didn’t say whether or not she was on the pill at the time of conception.) Clark-Moe was shocked to discover that under federal law, the health plan of federal employees does not cover abortion. She was able to pay for the abortion of her unborn child herself, but that makes her mad. More:

I’m not ashamed that, as a 29-year-old woman, I’m sexually active and I have a healthy, functioning reproductive system. In fact, I’m quite happy to be able to state this.

Here is the mindset: she is nearly 30 years old, chooses to have sex, and when her reproductive system works as it is intended to, she expects the taxpayer to pay for her to abort her child. The “quite happy” is telling.

As ever, we see that for many on the contemporary left, they want the government and private employers out of their bedrooms, but want them to leave their wallets behind.

(Note to readers: I have to be on the road for much of today, and will not be able to approve comments with the customary dispatch. Don’t assume I have trashcanned your comment if you don’t see it shortly after posting it.)
