Stuff that’s been piling up in the in-tray:

1. You’ll never guess who sings the hell out of the National Anthem. Really jaw-dropping, this. Just watch it. I’m not even kidding.

2. Win Riley’s excellent documentary about Walker Percy — see here for more info, and for the trailer — is going to be aired on a number of PBS stations on October 4. Win, a New Orleans native, sent me a preview copy a while back, and it’s terrific. Percy fans, literary Catholics, Southerners and others will be thrilled. If you’re in the Phoenix area, consider attending an early screening on October 1, at which Win will be present. Trust me on this, you don’t want to miss it. I’ll be blogging more about the film as we get closer to the national airdate.

3. Pat Robertson says Alzheimer’s disease is grounds for divorce. So much for “till death do us part,” I reckon. Is this really the position a prominent conservative Christian pastor wants to take? I wonder how Mrs. Robertson feels about this?

4. Did you know that according to public health statistics, 41 percent of all pregnancies in New York City end in abortion? Forty-one percent. In many neighborhoods — check out this map to show which ones — the abortion ratio climbs up to 70 percent. That is, more than two out of three babies conceived in those precincts die at the hands of an abortionist.
