I love the way Chris Christie rolls:
Jersey Boy!

Is there a video showing the behavior that prompted the outburst? Otherwise, Christie just looks like an angry fat man.
-
Well, the video is spliced, so I can’t judge how big of an idiot the guy was, in fact, being. That said, so long as America is a republic, I’m going to have to say, “Shut up, I’m the governor!” is a less than praiseworthy line.
-
Is that you in the background, Rod?
-
“I love the way Chris Christie rolls:”
You shouldn’t be making fun of his weight.
-
“stout republican virtue”
You shouldn’t be making fun of his weight.
Sorry, I just couldn’t help myself.
-
I think this good and long over due. I don’t have the time to offer up links, but yes other sites are reporting that there was more to this. I am so sick of some activist type tyranizing these types of events, hell in college and seminary there was always one or two of there idiots who’d ruin class discussions, time for people to tell the petty little tyrants to shove it.
-
It is an act. It is similar to GWBush running around Texas “clearing brush”. It is a carefully crafted public disposition that is the result of the study of focus groups and polling.
-
Dunno Rod…
What works at the local Rotary Hall doesn’t come across as well when said by a Governor, Senator, or President.
I’m a fan of Christie, but becoming less so as video(s) like this keep surfacing.
-
I think it would be more fun to watch him roll if the stage collapsed.
-
His choice of words seems too indelicate for President of the United States. But as for governor of New Jersey? Perfect.
-
Rude, pushy, in your face.
-
I think Christie revealed a lot about himself when he told a woman who asked him about why he had his children in private school that it was “none of your business.”
A couple days later he was on Morning Joe and Scarborough asked him the same question. Christie gave a reasonable answer to Joe (something about religious training, I think).
In other words, its OK to lash out at a regular citizen, but when a “celebrity” is interviwing him, Christie is the model of reason and good manners.
I think that’s pretty much the definition of a bully.
-
God, what an arrogant buffoon.
-
You are wrong about the Good Governor; he does not need to be heckled to heckle. He’s a big ole bully–that’s the way he rolls.
Check out how he, a “fiscal conservative,” reacted when questioned about his use of a state helicoptor, to give you just one example of his enormous sense of entitlement.
-
Did he use a state helicopter to fly himself to his son’s baseball game afterwards?

“Is that you in the background, Rod?”
LOL — I see the dude. Looks like if Dreher and Douhat had a love child that was older than them.

FWIW, I attended Rowan, back when it was called Glassboro State College.
When I heard the governor’s remarks about merging Rutgers and Rowan, I assumed that he was talking about making Rowan part of the Rutgers system. As best I can tell from reading some articles, the governor is proposing that the Camden branch of Rutgers be merged with Rowan.
Rowan is a lot more selective a school than Glassboro, but it doesn’t have the Rutgers name, and I can understand why Rutgers-Camden students would be upset about losing their connection to the Rutgers system. (I am not suggesting that the student was right to be rude to the governor.)
Maybe someone closer to the situation can make sense of it.
-
My understanding is that he was getting all tall and large with a former Navy Seal, now a law student who had the temerity to question the portly governor. Of course, unable to handle the questions, Christie had the police escort him out. The only person being heckled was the veteran.
And again, I ask myself why I come here. Today is it to watch bullies cheered?
-
Well, we love the way you[r eyes] roll, Rod!
-
Rod, you really need to see the whole video.
I live in NJ, and Christie really is a bully; He just won’t listen to other people – which seems to be a problem in American politics, no? Aren’t you in favor of more civility and intellectual honesty on public discourse? If so, I don’t see how you (or anyone) could be a Christie fan.
FYI: I’m not a Democrat (in fact the Democrats here have their own entrenched and corrupt political machine). I support several of Christies policies…. but the guy is a jerk, period.
-
Hate the bullying, love the bully….
-
But Rod likes to defend the bully, such as the guy who shot his daughter’s laptop. Anyone with an emotional or honest reaction to the bully, such as the author who, when asked, expressed some measured irritation at Limbaugh’s demeaning criticism, well they’re to be dealt with with hyperbole. Sexist terms like “catfight”, well, that’s fine. Chris Christie calling people “idiots”, that’s fine too.
This is why I struggle in the ballot box. It seems modern American conservatism stands for nothing more than the right to be the biggest a**hole as they want to be — to the women in their lives, to countries they don’t agree with, to the environment, to the poor.
It really is tiresome and it certainly isn’t Christian or conservative.
-
beaker30, unfortunately, I’d have to rephrase what you said as follows..
It seems modern America stands for nothing more than the right to be the biggest a**hole as they want to be
oh well, so it goes…

Like I’ve said numerous time, here’s Mitt’s running mate. No one else make a lick of sense. That’s a dude blue-collar folks can get behind. Mitt–not so much.

Here’s an account. Apparently the man did interrupt Governor Christie a few times, though this is a parochial subject and the questioner’s comments were far from inflammatory. Basically he was concerned merging Rutgers and Rowan would hurt the value of his (and future Rutgers’ students) degree.
I don’t know. Seems like Christie, as Governor, ought to be more respectful to his constituents. Aren’t our leaders supposed to lead by example?
-
The right also loved Rumsfeld, one of the worst Sec. of Def. ever. Not sure why being obnoxious is a virtue.
Steve

>Seems like Christie, as Governor, ought to be more respectful to his constituents.
I think he was being “New Jersey respectful”
-
the Rowan/Rutgers merger is seriously opposed in the state – and the guys questions were legit and not some dumb speech. The Governor has more than explained his proposal – he should try listening to the people of NJ for a change – isn’t that democracy? That was the purpose of the meeting – not just another chance for Christie to trample over the electorate’s right to express themselves on this issue. He might try listening to all those who do not agree with him that a “bigger” Rutgers is going to lead to “better” education.
I don’t get how Republicans are so enamored of this guy – he is a bully and for sure hasn’t demonstrated much respect for “We the people”. I admire his defense of Muslim appointees to the bench – sometimes his willingness to “take no prisoners” is in a just cause – but considering his own questionable record as a federal attorney – he had some nerve lecturing that guy on proper behavior for an attorney.
-
“Rude, pushy, in your face.”
New Jersey is not like the Midwest. Thank Gawd. -
It looks like Gov Christie didn’t handle this very well.
But I do think it’s worth saying that if you think a robust verbal response to rude behaviour at a public meeting is “bullying”, then clearly you’ve never been the victim of real bullying.
I have, and this ain’t it.
And yes, logic-choppers, I know something does not have to be the worst possible kind of x to qualify as an incidence of x. But with such an incendiary and serious charge as “bullying”, one ought to be careful about applying the full force of the accusation to a relatively minor occurrence of the offence. The man who, in a moment of impatience and anger, uses the n-word to describe someone who cut him up, is in some sense racist. But his behaviour is not remotely comparable to someone who consciously and deliberately wages a long campaign of racially prejudiced bullying against a co-worker or fellow student, let alone to that of a Klansman who burns down a black church.
-
beaker 30, I don’t think you’re describing Rod at all. Other than that, well said.I wish the Christian Right would work on loving its political enemies.
-
My favorite moments are when Christie grabs the union bosses by the collar and glove-slaps them around a few times. Somebody needed to. The taxpayers are weary of having that done too many times to them by the public employee unions.
-
If you listen very, very closely you can hear Brown yelling in the background. Unfortunately, you can’t hear what he is saying, but he is saying something. Go Christie.
-
That sort of behavior shouldn’t be acceptable in public officials anywhere.
-
Anyone else get a Morton Downey Jr. vibe off of this? Christie as talk show host? You guys talk a lot about Rush and insensitivity, but man, MDJ made Limbaugh look like a pantywaist.
Also, amcom reader bait: Morton Downey Jr interviewing…Ron Paul in 1988. http://youtu.be/GCxDrfs4GtM
Ahead of his time, even then.

“Respect my authoritah!” as the similarly portly Eric Cartman of South Park would say.
