Holland, And Nowhere Else

Naarden Vesting, the Netherlands [1]

Naarden Vesting, the Netherlands

That was the view out of the kitchen window of my friend’s apartment in Naarden Vesting [2], a fortified village in suburban Amsterdam. It’s quite charming. The only view I could imagine that’s more Dutch than this is a shot from a bridge over an Amsterdam canal. I’ll be able to do that next week. Tonight I’m in Noord-Brabant, near the Belgian border. I can almost smell the lambic [3] from here.

What, no photos of the Sex Museum, or the red-light district, or a hash bar? (And fortunately, or unfortunately depending on your perspective, Amsterdam finally got ’round to replacing all its decrepit trams a few years back. It used to be, the public transit offered a rougher ride than one of those amusement-park roller-coasters–not major fixed attractions, but the cheap portable coasters that get periodically set up in parking lots and at county fairs. All part of the city’s charm, of course!)

I understand “fortified village” in the context of the Middle Ages, but what on earth does it mean today?

Beautiful!

I wonder if the grocery stores in Holland still sell milk cartons of “vla”, a drinkable custard that I encountered there in my 1986 trip to Amsterdam.

Vla came in vanilla, chocolate, and some other flavors. It was delightful stuff, far nicer than yogurt or kefir.

Reminds me of Busch Gardens Europe, (Williamsburg Va.)

Only less authentic…

P.S. Stick a fork in Europe, it’s cooked.

P.P.S. Europe is the suffocating canary in the American coal mine.

If you’re heading across the border to Antwerp, let me know, and I can give you suggestions.

It may be beautiful, but not beautiful enough to keep Resolved Waldron (one of my maternal forebears and also of Teddy Roosevelt) from getting on a boat and coming to America. For which fact I am extremely grateful as I cannot conceive of a world that lacked umpteenth cousin Teddy and me.

(I couldn’t resist it.)

Do you have a non-instagrammed version?

@Lee Penn
Yes, we still have ‘vla’. I don’t quite understand why it’s only available in The Netherlands.
