If he gets the nomination or after that the presidency, every gay marriage activist in the country will be holding up a sign that says, “Hey, Newt, I just want to get married once.”

If he is elected, it will be pretty difficult to take Callista seriously as First Lady when she promotes Christian values.

I agree with this. I think it important to remember that the second wife helped him cheat on the first, so why credit her assertions?

ROFLMAO!!! Yes!!

Hilarious. Sad. Clever.

Yeah, well they still voted for him in droves in SC. Apparently the hatred of Mormonism (even though it shares the same reverence for family values as the Christian right CLAIMS to believe in) is greater than the disgust over Newt’s sex life.
Being someone who lives in the Western U.S., I view it differently. The hatred of the Christian right for Mormons is driven by jealousy, plain and simple.
Mormons tend to be successful. They also tend to be well-balanced, psychologically speaking. The Mormon religion emphasizes a strong work and entrepreneurial ethic. Mormons seem to actually enjoy living the settled family life. Evangelicals and Catholics, on the other hand, tend to be loosers, social-economically, and to be psychologically screwed up as well. Neither Catholicism nor Evangelicism promotes the entrepreneurial work ethic to the same extend as Mormonism.

Gingrich is so overflowing with hubris, he’s bound to self-destruct somewhere along the line. Hope it happens before he reaches the White House.

At least Gingrich actually got married to the women he was sleeping with. In this day and age, that makes him a dinosaur.

Re: Abelard Lindsey – “Evangelicals and Catholics, on the other hand, tend to be loosers”
A Polish-Catholic has more fun at one wedding than a Mormon has in his entire life.
-
@SteveM:
Ditto for Irish and Italian Catholics!!

Plus he’s screwing around on his wife with other women, outside of John Ensign how long has it been since a Republican was cheating on his wife with another woman and not another man? -
Using his children to defend him is despicable! He should fight his own battles!
Forgiveness? The ones he should be asking for forgiveness & trying to make things right are his first 2 wives.
According to wife 2, he’s never done this.

This is somewhat a stereotype, I guess, but I’ve seen it enough to believe it has some validity — with its emphasis on salvation and being saved, i have seen many very broken and dysfunctional people “find Jesus” at evangelical churches. Many of these people continue to lead dysfunctional lives as they hold onto their faith. I think these people also are more willing to fall for human saviors — Joel Osteen, et al., and they become convinced of the infallibility if the message. I’m not criticizing this, I just think it is a reality.

Lord Karth is right.
If I had married all the women…
Oh lord, I think relatively few men my age would even want to think about if they had done that.

I know that Newt’s not Polish, and only recently became a Catholic, but does your statement mean that he’s had three times as much fun in his life as Mitt Romney? -
Abelard Lindsey: Most of the voters weren’t motivated by hatred or disgust for Mormons. I think the only effect Mormonism had on the South Carolina primary was the way Romney, with his awkward mannerisms, reminded voters of a door-to-door missionary.

Good grief, if your tar brush were any broader you could paint a small planet with it in one stroke.

Abelard Lindsey, I live in South Carollna, and I can say with a fair amount of certainty that South Carolinians didn’t vote for Newt because they “hate” Mormons. In fact, Mitt’s Mormonism was pretty much a non-issue around here. (He was leading in our polls by double digits until the last minute, and we’ve long known about his Mormonism.) The few people I know who DID consider his religion saw it as a plus, for the reasons you mention above. Newt’s victory here was a combination of two things – his powerful performance in the debates that week – especially his smackdown of the MSM – and Mitt’s shifty, squirrelly handling of the tax returns issue. Let’s not attribute hatred where none (or, at least very little) exists. That’s such an unfortunate trend these days.

Abelard
Nobody is jealous of Mormons. Evangellicals don’t like Mormons because they regard their religion as a dangerous cult which leads good Christians astray and leads to their damnation.

Gentlemen, times have changed. Once American values actually embraced “three strikes, and you’re out.”
Now you actually get 15 yards, for a personal foul.
Not to mention some extra wives.
-
Neither Catholicism nor Evangelicism promotes the entrepreneurial work ethic to the same extend as Mormonism.
Or Joseph Smith’s conceptual variant of “open marriage.”
-

Well – a few of them, anyway…

Wile E. Quixote, said “Plus he’s screwing around on his wife with other women, outside of John Ensign how long has it been since a Republican was cheating on his wife with another woman and not another man?”
Not sure if the gender is all that important with regards to infidelity, but Larry Craig would be an example of a married Republican having a gay sex scandal.
-
I think Abelard Lindsey is wrong to disrespect Catholics and evangelicals, but I think there is truth in the claim that Mormons tend to have a success oriented sub-culture. The few I’ve met have had the Protestant work ethic on steroids.

If Marianne Gingrich is speaking truthfully, can we consider the implications of her statement that Newt complained about her wanting him all to herself and said (paraphrasing here) “Callista doesn’t feel that way.” Does that mean that, with the present Mrs. Gingrich’s approval, there are currently other women in Newt’s life?
-
@Skifara,
That begs the question, can we expect a Herman Cain moment for ol’ Newt in a few months. If he does have an “open marriage” with Callista how many jilted lovers does he have floating out there just waiting to get that phone call from a Democratic Party operative?
I would hazzard to guess that no matter what people think of Newt’s camapign againt the “media”, having several women come forward to explain his continued fast and loose lifestyle would be a pretty big blow to his “redemption” story line.

well – re: religion and income – Buddhists have the highest percentage of people earning over 100,000 a year – 22% – maybe that is due to all those Hollywood types! Catholics are second (19%) and Mormons third (16%).

@Abelard Lindsey “Mormons tend to be successful. …”
Might it be that Christianity offers a home and hope for the down-trodden. It is not that the bright and hard-working are not in Christian churches, it is just that they are mixed in with and among people who have come from just unimaginable backgrounds … because Christ truly can give them rest and hope … real answers to real problems … even if the answer is not a higher socio-economic status.
I would also challenge the notion that Mormonism is well-balanced. Can any rational mind believe that the American Indian is of Jewish decent, or that there were great cities and battles in North America, where there are no artifacts to suggest such.
However, with all the nonsense, Modern Mormons still have a lot that is right on and works, especially in terms of family values, but what they have right also aligns with Biblical teaching, even if not practiced by some who claim to be Christian (for example leaving two wives).
Perhaps it is that the forgiveness and fresh start that the God of the Bible offers to those who reach to Christ as their savior is what is really what draws the down-trodden. There is no shortage of testimonies of how those who have embrace Christ as Savior have been truly reborn, 180 degree turn around. I can only hope and pray that Newt Gingrich has truly come to that place, whether or not he gets elected.
BTW, if Newt Gingrich becomes president, will Marianne be referred to as the “First Lady Once Removed.”

Newt Gingrich’s pluck and conservative track record couldn’t save his ridiculous campaign. He actually offers to help presumptive GOP nominee Mitt defeat Barack.

Sounds like the average American family these days.
