“Who is that dog at the back door?” I asked Julie this morning.

“Awww, that’s Ginger. She belongs to [a family that lives half a mile down the road]. She’s the sweetest thing. Her best friend used to live here.”

“The family we bought the house from?”

“Yes. She loved playing with their dog. Every now and then she will show up and just wait for her old friend to come out. She doesn’t know that he’s gone.”

Ginger stayed on the back porch almost all day long. Below, a photo of her I took this morning. Above, I managed to get out little chicken-turd-eating rascal Roscoe in the frame. Ginger had moved around to the front porch. It’s been raining all afternoon, which is why the window looks like it does. Roscoe has been growling and ready for a fight all day long, but that sweet old Ginger just sits out there looking like Labrador retrievers all do, like the best friend of everybody in the world. She doesn’t know that she hopes in vain for her buddy to come out and play.
