Why Did Trump Fire Comey?

You just never know with Donald Trump, do you? Firing the FBI director, especially like this? Yes, the Democrats are being outrageous hypocrites in wailing over the fate of the FBI director whose scalp they wanted over the Clinton e-mail investigation — but still, this thing stinks like a Superfund site.

Notice the second paragraph in Trump’s firing letter:

That’s weird, isn’t it? “Though you told me you’re not investigating you, I’m firing you anyway.” This of course is Trump trying to short-circuit anybody claiming that he canned Comey in a “Saturday Night Massacre” [1] move. But come on. Are we really supposed to believe that Donald Trump abruptly fired the FBI director over the handling of an e-mail investigation that Trump praised, and from which he may have benefited politically?

Either Trump is a colossal idiot, or he is hiding something, and is a colossal idiot about trying to cover it up. Either way, I don’t see how anybody can take what Trump has done here at face value. From the NYT: [2]

Senior White House and Justice Department officials had been working on building a case against Mr. Comey since at least last week, according to administration officials. Mr. Sessions had been charged with coming up with reasons to fire him, the officials said.

The timing is extremely suspicious. Extremely. If Trump is not guilty of anything other than political stupidity in this matter, then he sure has a way of making it look like he’s trying to cover up something. Do you really believe that Donald Trump fired Jim Comey because he was mean to Hillary Clinton? No, seriously, do you believe that?

You cannot possibly believe that.

[Comey] sealed his fate by following that up by asking the Department of Justice for more funding for the investigation just days ago

Has Comey said this? No. Has his deputy, McCabe, said this? No. Can Anne name anyone from DoJ who has claimed this? No.

Investigation of Trump/Russia began in July of last year (so said Comey) under Obama.

10 months after the start of said investigation, which had yet to uncover any evidence of lawbreaking.

claiming it’s due to the investigation that put him in office

Incompetently handled investigation, causing loss of public confidence from supporters of Trump and Clinton (bipartisanship!). And Comey did not put Trump in office, as if policy issues and personal factors and the “time for a change” tendency after a two-term administration meant nothing.

Noah my recollection is that when Freeh resigned Bush wanted him to to stay on. He certainly wasn’t fired. See above for my response to (your twin?) about William Sessions.

Noah your partisanship is so driven it’s practically manic. Why? As I indicated above no one is voting now. You appear to have some horse in this race that I don’t quite comprehend.

Multiple things can be true at once

1) Russian government tried to influence the election for strategic reasons. And used Flynn et al as it’s catspaws.

2) Trump, despite himself, ran a good campaign

3) Hillary ran a horrid campaign

4) Trump is a corrupt buffoon who could destroy the Republic

5) Comey was hoist by his own petard

6) Hillary Clinton is not a crook

7) Hillary Clinton has crappy taste in friends and advisors

8) Trump has no clue what he is doing

9) the FBI was pro-Trump during the campaign, especially the New York office

10) the media is this country is useless

You claim that the President has dismissed the FBI Director because the latter was close to uncovering the former’s participation in treason, and you do so based on gossip and unfounded speculation, while ignoring contrary evidence (not contrary gossip — evidence, such as McCabe’s testimony today), and I am the “manic” partisan?

This country went to war in Iraq based on flimsy evidence and public hysteria — and the evidence backing that decision was more substantial than the as-yet baseless “Russia hacked the election/Trump’s a Manchurian candidate!” demagoguery. I don’t want to see my country go to war with Russia, which would be a far greater calamity than Iraq, over a pack of brazen lies sold by those who would rather ruin others’ lives than watch the duly-elected President enact his policy agenda.

Hound – I agree with all 10 of your points. My only objection would be to the use of the word “good” in #2. I’d say he ran an “effective” campaign, in that he achieved his desired goal. But I would never call it “good”, in fact I’d say it was just as “horrid” as Hillary’s. But hers was horrid and ineffective.

” I don’t want to see my country go to war with Russia …”

Noah that’s absurdly irrelevant.

You have now seen that Trump himself has admitted, on camera, that the “Trump/Russia Thing” as I think he put it, did motivate him to fire Comey? And now his new spokesperson has said, on camera, that the investigation should wrap up pretty quickly since Comey has been fired?

There’s your unfounded gossip and speculation…

Who would have thought that when Rod wrote the headline for this post that within a couple days Trump himself would provide the answer. Absolutely stunning.

You may be new here, but Noah is a white supremacist. Excuse me, white “separatist”. As I said before–and yes, I know of the 28th President’s apostasies on the issue–Trump is the best president that so-called “defenders of the white race” and whatnot have had since Wilson.

He’s a showboat, he’s a grandstander….Regardless of recommendation, I was going to fire Comey….And in fact when I decided to just do it I said to myself, I said, “You know, this Russia thing with Trump and Russia is a made-up story, it’s an excuse by the Democrats for having lost an election that they should’ve won.”

When do we start the impeachment proceedings?

Trump is hiding something.

In other news, water is wet.
