Hey, I’ve been very generously asked by Chris Bodenner and the folks at Andrew Sullivan’s blog to come by when I’m in New York next week to tape a segment of Ask Anything. I’m looking forward to meeting Chris, and, I hope, renewing my friendship with Andrew, given that I haven’t actually seen him in many years.

Readers of my forthcoming Little Way Of Ruthie Leming will see in the book that Ruthie’s cancer diagnosis compelled me to reach out to Andrew and rebuild bridges we had burned in fighting over the SSM issue. I learned from the shock of my sister’s cancer diagnosis that life is too damn short and tragic to nurse grudges, especially over things as petty as politics. If forgiveness and mercy can be offered, you should offer it, I learned, and if it can be asked for, you should ask for it. Andrew and I aren’t going to agree on some things, but that doesn’t mean that we have to be enemies, I figured. We had argued pretty spectacularly in public, but  I wrote him from the airport in Baton Rouge, after telling Ruthie goodbye for what I feared would be the last time, asking him for a new beginning. And he kindly, and big-heartedly, responded.

Ruthie did that. I really do believe she will do it for a lot more people once the book comes out next week. A woman who heard me speak recently about the book took me aside and said she’d ordered a copy for her estranged daughter, who is going through a bad time right now, and could use some hope, and the chance at healing.

Go here to vote on questions you want me to answer next week when I’m in front of the Dish camera.
