I made a beer run this afternoon to stock up on Louisiana craft beer for the upcoming Walker Percy Weekend. It does get hot down here this time of year. Just a reminder to folks headed this way: the dress code is casual. Dress up to get messy at the crawfish boil, and there’s really no need to get remotely formal for the Saturday night event either. It’s not supposed to rain this weekend, but it will be hot and sticky, so comfort comes first.

You can get breakfast at Bird Man or at Audubon Cafe, but there are also two grocery stores with deli counters. For lunch, the Magnolia Cafe is usually the most hopping place in town, but there’s the Audubon Cafe, and Sonny’s Pizza, and Que Pasa (Tex-Mex), and the Carriage House restaurant in the Myrtles (but prepare to share your meal with the ghosts). Am I forgetting anything? I’ll update if so. Of course there’s the one and only Hot Tails across the bridge in New Roads, as well as some other restaurants. We also have McDonalds and Sonic, and a couple of gas stations where you can get fried chicken and catfish. South of the Border is a classic Southern roadhouse on Highway 61, just south of the Mississippi state line.

Audubon Package Liquor, known to locals as Ricky’s, is where you go to buy your spirits, but you can also get beer, wine, and spirits in the supermarkets here. The Chevron station on Highway 61 has a pretty good beer selection. Alas, no juke joints around here (except for the new IPA from Baton Rouge’s Tin Roof Brewery). Don’t ask for directions to the double-wide trailer redneck strip club; that’s Mississippi’s business.
