Survey Finds Americans want Transportation Infrastructure Improvements

A recent national survey of registered voters conducted by Hart Research Associates and Public Opinion Strategies for The Rockefeller Foundation found that while Americans across the political spectrum overwhelmingly want transportation infrastructure improvements, they are just reluctant to pay for them without knowing the specifics about where their tax dollars are going. This is the same insight that Center Director, Bill Lind and the late Paul Weyrich found in their study on the mechanics of passing transportation referenda. When specific details about improvements are laid out for the American electorate, they are more likely to give their approval. Consequently, the more detailed the vision for transportation infrastructure, clearly laying out the benefits to be gained versus the costs, the more likely that a bipartisan majority of Americans will get aboard. This is good news for policy makers. They know that the path to a growing economy and prosperity runs through modern transportation infrastructure. Give the electorate the details and they will buy in. So, what’s not conservative about economic development, wealth creation and prosperity?
