Talking to New York State Conservative party types over the years leads me to take a bit different take on the 23rd District Race. From what they tell me their mission in launching the party was to act as a counter balance to the New York Liberal Party, which had some real clout in that state some time ago. At bottom I think they want to be in a position to either endorse candidates for a piece of the action or threaten to run against candidates that were too far to the left. In this sense they may feel that they achieved their goal. The district will probably come home in two years and the GOP party bosses will be gun-shy about future picks.

What we are all reacting to is the intrusion of national figures in the race.
