Doesn't "hav[ing] to be prudent about the fights we pick" mean he DOES "concede that America needs to be more modest in its ambitions"? I'll have to listen to the speech to figure out the context of the short quotes you say are idealistic, but I really doubt that they are. Can you offer more complete quotes and explanation?
