Rev. Dan Hannan
Poor old Britisher Dan Hannan is fast becoming the transatlantic Right’s version of Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Just a few days after his remarks against the NHS on Glenn Beck’s show made him a national hate figure in the UK, he is now in hot water for making positive noises about Enoch Powell to Reason TV.
“He was somebody who understood the importance of national democracy, who understood why you need to live in an independent country and what that meant, as well as being a free marketeer and a small government Conservative.”
Parmjit Dhanda, Labour MP for Gloucester, has already smelt rivers of Hannan’s blood, and called on the Tory leadership to force him out. How long until David Cameron throws his MEP under the bus?
PS – It also occurs to me that there is something a bit sad about Hannan’s unbridled enthusiasm for the Internet. It made him famous, true, but now it is being used by his opponents to make him sound like a nutter.

Were he in Parliament he would probably get booted. In the light of UKIP’s success in the last Euros and the fact the only person keeping Nigel Farage off the top spot was Dan Hannan. I think they will let him stick around for a while… if not UKIP would welcome him (and his supporters) with open arms.
I hope the comparison to Rev. Wright is sarcasm… comparing the two is ludicrous if not be meant to be humorous.
There are always those embarrassing people who insist on telling the truth while you’re trying to win an election. Actually Freddy, Hannan sounds pretty main stream in the American context. But we have not gone so far down the road to utopia as you.

Indeed, but it is with good reason that he sees himself as an underdog who needs to use every tool at his disposal to combat those allied against him.
I think he’s fantastic. The EU has fascistic tendencies, and he’s keeping them honest, or at least slowing them down.
The average Brit doesn’t see anything wrong with Enoch Powell. It is the neoconnish Tories and the cultural Marxist Left who think he is the devil. Unfortunately, the latter run the media.
“PS – It also occurs to me that there is something a bit sad about Hannan’s unbridled enthusiasm for the Internet. It made him famous, true, but now it is being used by his opponents to make him sound like a nutter”
The “nutters” are the ones who created the UK’s PC-Multicult police state and the EUSSR.
You’re last point is silly beyond belief. Consider the following:
“PS – It also occurs to me that there is something a bit sad about Ron Paul’s unbridled enthusiasm for the Internet. It made him famous, true, but now it is being used by his opponents to make him sound like a nutter.”
Would anyone consider the above statement a rational critic against the Ron Paul 2008 campaign? Without the internet, his campaign wouldn’t have been 1/10 of what it was. Likewise, without the internet, the name “Daniel Hannan” wouldn’t have any meaning.
