Septimus, you asked about the reaction, to our hearing about the Old Country. Matt put his finger on it. I watch parliament on CSPAN with great joy. I have a vague sense of Labour and Conservatives, but I don't know who many of the other players are (and will remain too lazy to go look it up... unless someone calls me a fool, and challenges one of my stupid observations... LOL).

In this age of internet, I look forward to the day when I can dial a channel, and watch the parlaiment of any nation, with ongoing translation. Perhaps some of our giveaway dollars to the international community should be keyed to facilitating this.

I was always struck by how much more the average Hong Kong citizen seemed to me to be like the average american, in temperment and outlook, ...much more so than the average French or Spanish person.

Matt, wouldn't it be great to hear Obama or Bush having to hear someone intoning "Resign!" every time he spoke.

Septimus, I tried but failed to come up with a witty way of employing the "There is something of the night about Anne Widdicombe" quote. Too bad. Any ideas?

I hope that the bankers involved spend a lot of that money buying real-world items that will hold their value if things get much worse, because I don't think we've hit the bottom yet.

Then again, if bankers were gifted with foresight, maybe all of this could have been avoided in the first place, so maybe it would be better not to hold one's breath expecting it now.

Anyway, no matter what it's problems, the House of Commons is a great body that's fun to watch on television. Perhaps it's the Farrah Fawcett of world politics. I spent a lot of time watching both on television as a child, and while the lessons they taught me were very different, I wouldn't trade either one.
