		<description>I hope I can say this without raving or sounding bitter, but Letterman&#039;s joke really was garbage. Sarah Palin may be keenly aware of her image and how to manipulate it, but she didn&#039;t exactly invent that practice, and she and her family are being savaged in an unprecedented way, I think.

I am all for mean-spirited jokes about public figures, so long as they&#039;re actually &lt;i&gt;about&lt;/i&gt; the public figures. Sarah Palin put herself out there, so she&#039;s fair game. Her daughter, who is a child, didn&#039;t. She&#039;s dealing with adolescence, which is presumably hard enough for the daughter of a public figure (and new aunt) without David &quot;I was funny in the 90&#039;s&quot; Letterman making jokes about her sex life.</description>
