Ours robs us to enrich the politically connected, while allowing our jobs to disappear over the horizon. What little claim to legitimacy such a government ever had is rapidly vanishing in the eyes of its subjects, and the government knows it. Legitimacy — in this case, the lack of it — is indeed the thing that determines the future viability of a government.
