Legitimacy -- in this case, the lack of it -- is indeed the thing that determines the future viability of a government.  Ours robs us to enrich the politically connected, while allowing our jobs to disappear over the horizon.  What little claim to legitimacy such a government ever had is rapidly vanishing in the eyes of its subjects, and the government knows it.  No wonder it needs such measures as the Patriot Act to keep us in thrall.</description>
