MST3K 2.0
The June Reason has my article on the web-based descendants of Mystery Science Theater 3000—Cinematic Titanic and Rifftrax. Fans of the show should try out the new efforts by the MST3K alumni. One thing that is new since I wrote my article is that the Rifftrax gang, led by Mike Nelson, has gone into more direct competition with by selling DVDs of he and his partners’ mocking cheesy movies such as Missile to the Moon and Plan 9 from Outer Space.

Joel vs Mike? That would be a tough one if Crow and Tom Servo hadn’t sided with Joel. I hope I get a chance to see them live in the not too distant future.
Great article Clark. I’m such a MST3K nerd that I had taken to buying volumes off EBay, and later renting available episodes from Netflix until RiffTrax came along. I still rent old episodes — in fact I viewed “Teenage Strangler” for the first time last week — but RiffTrax provides new material, making up (almost) for the crushing blow of the series’ demise in ’99
my favorite episode ever is “the sinister urge” but they are mostly all great
“in this next scene, actor peter graves graduates from the university of minnesota”- from begining of the end
Despite my enjoyment of the unintended humor found in bad science fiction and horror movies, I never liked “Mystery Science Theatre.” I found the constant chatter annoying, and much of the humor offputting. I much preferred the approach of Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, who didn’t comment over the movie but still managed to deftly point out the nonsense going on in the film in her well-timed breaks during the film.
I was always a fan of Joe Bob Briggs’s MonsterVision in the mid-1990s. Though I liked MST3K too.
I’m going to check out these links immediately! I’ve always loved MST3K and will pass on my affection for these shows to my 2 kids (as soon as they hit their teens).
The bigger travesty? Sport Center’s Cheap Seats has not been released on video. It’s especially enjoyable if you’re not a sports fan. They even did a riff once on MST3K mocking Cheap Seats (kind of a play within a play conceit), but pretty funny nonetheless.
This is just about the last thing I expected to read about on TAC. As a MSTie for many years now I have no complaints. Other than the fact that so many episodes aren’t out on DVD yet.
