Dispatching the Heretic

Rod Dreher took note of the ranting of Mark Levin, who recently told a caller “I don’t know why your husband doesn’t put a gun to his temple. Get the hell out of here.” Dreher opines, “Having spent about 15 unpleasant minutes listening to this creep, I cannot imagine why anybody pays attention to him.”

I’ve never listened ot Levin, but I followed his witless ravings when he was affiliated with National Review Online. while I can’t understand why a sane person would listen to Levin for any length of time, It makes perfect sense for those in the movement conservative cult to do so and cheer when Levin rudely dispatches a heretic.

  1. Iread some of his latest book in the bookstore. it’s a crappy version of ron pauls “the revolution” without the anit war stuff.

the conservative movement today is basically trying to find an obama style “personality” , most recently sarah palin, and a ron paul style “philosphy” because those are two recent things that worked.

    their versions suck

  2. On the radio, Mark Levin sounds a lot like Joe Peschi with delusions of intelligence. I don’t think that people take him seriously as much as he channels their anger at the liberal establishment. When you think of it, channeling other peoples anger is more of a performance than an exercise in thought.

What seems truly inexplicable to me is why anyone would buy his book after looking at his face on the cover.

  3. I’ve never listened to Mark Levin, so I cannot speak to him. I have seen his new book advertised in various places and did feel that it looked like a knock off of Ron Paul’s book (minus the antiwar\anti-empire positions). Though if he is anything like most of the rest of right-wing radio, he is just another barking dog with a microphone. I really don’t understand how people are taken in by these bellicose windbags.

  5. Virgil. “Barking dog with a microphone,” very good!

People I know who like Levin all have one thing in common. They were conditioned during the cold war to react viscerally to any skepticism of American war aims. And to be frank, during the Cold War, most criticism of our fight with communism was dishonorable or misguided. It hasn’t yet dawned on many citizens who consider themselves conservatives, that we are in a new era and that they are being duped by opportunists like Levin.

I think it’s important to understand that most people are not politically minded and have vague notions about the political concepts and principles we debate here. They have other things to think about like making a living and raising families. Unless we can define and broadcast a conservative world view that they can understand and adhere to, they will be in the hands of the Levins of the world.

  6. Mr. Meehan is correct. Burke used the analogy of the cattle under the tree to illustrate the stolid common Englishmen. Most Americans are similarly disinterested and uninformed. I suppose the question is whether one chooses to seek an accessible and understandable expression of true conservatism or just wash the hands of them.
