I cannot agree with Brendan Oneill's conspiracy theory that the aristos and police are in a plot to undermine parliamentary democracy. In fact the police have decided that to prosecute any Pinocchios would be against the public interest. They seem to be identifying the interests of the corrupt members of the house of commons with the public interest. The conspiracy seems to be to preserve whatever tatters remain of m.p's self respect rather than to get rid of the house of commons.

Brendan O'Neill has a very interesting piece on how the British expenses scandal has brought out the "vultures of undemocracy" - the police, the monarchists, and, worst of the lot, the media, all empowering themselves amid the crisis.

Whatever the truth, Britain is in a bad way.
