I find it fascinating that prior to 9/11, the Taliban had completely wiped out the poppy crops in Afghanistan. Their action was deliberate which leads one to believe that they were never interested in drug trafficking or the associated profits. Equally fascinating is that after 9/11 when the US invaded Afghanistan, the poppy crops were not only re-established, but have provided bumper crops every year since.
Kabol is as an expensive a place to live as Manhattan. There are poppy palaces and upscale malls, 5 star hotels...all the trappings of the West. My take-away is that the US invaded specifically to re-establish and PROTECT the poppy crop for a historic, record-breaking opium yield. The last fascinating fact is that third world countries still can't get their hands on opioid analgesics for medicinal use. The War ON Drugs should be renamed the War FOR Drugs. Sad little world. Greed is its the death knell. When is enough $$$ enough?

In June of 2001, a story was published on how the Taliban had eradicated poppy production. Now 8 years later, with the Taliban as the propped up boggy-men, the Heroin trade is up 1000%. How Ironic, that the very people they blame for the poppy farmers, eradicated it, before the war on terror.

It's time people woke up and understood, Hamid Karzai and his puppet government are using our military to protect their precious poppy fields, all in the name of the war on terror. IMO our own military may unknowingly be protecting the poppy fields from the Taliban, it's a sick joke, but history does repeat itself, just as the British Empire profited from the drug trade when they were on top, so does America. History may call America the empire of Sex, Drugs, and Hollywood, we sure created the best made for TV drama Empire the world has ever seen!

Oddly enough, to the degree that what we're doing in Afghanistan is enabling this opulence it doesn't offend me as much as what we're doing with these bailouts to enable the opulence we see with these big banks and such. After all foreigners are *supposed* to rip us off.

Struck me before that the corruption involved in money we spent on Iraq and Afghanistan "reconstruction" constituted perhaps the biggest looting of the American taxpayer ever. Ha! What a naif!

As Janeane Garofolo put it, while you keep getting more and more cynical, it's tough keeping up.

Cheers,
