Kara, have you ever even been to Iraq? I have, and in my time there, I learned that much of what Americans think they 'know' about it just isn't so. That applies to Juan Cole as well. I'm puzzled as to why you believe Mr. Cole is the Gospel on the war. He's not. Talk about something you understand.

This is a loser for war critics. The pathetic reality of the current political culture (in which Democrats led by Rahm Emmanuel promptly surrendered any substantive policy action on the war after having exploited it fully in the election) is that we need to argue in favor of "success" in the surge if we want to get out. You will see the war proponents gradually and quietly begin to ratify these observations of unrest, for the purpose of exploiting the notion that "they're waiting for the Americans to leave", to argue that we have to stay.

The President has effectively endorsed that view by approving an indefinite troop present that is equivalent to our continued war footing in South Korea.

As ever, for the War Party, it's "heads we win, tails you lose"--and either way, Americans and Iraqis die for their destructive and nonsensical ideological enthusisams and the political cowardice of the Democrats.
