Did anyone who actually pays attention think that Obama would be quick to change things in Iraq. Did anyone think that it was really even realistically possible?

Considering Obama's campaign positions on Pakistan and Afghanistan, it's really hard to be surprised. This is going to be a status quo presidency.

That said, I'm skeptical that most Americans have turned from interventionism. I think, rather, they're just against intervening in wars that aren't going to be successful. In other words, they've turned against Iraq not because they think it was a bad political decision, but because it hasn't worked out.

"Bush reportedly said, inter alia, that he 'wished the intelligence had been different on Iraq.'"

That's actually a very interesting if not a spectacular statement from a couple of different perspectives.

Firstly, if I recall correctly after it was initially discovered that there were no WMD's Bush nevertheless was still saying that it didn't matter and that he still would have invaded Iraq regardless. And now of course he seems to be saying the opposite.

Secondly, how revealing it is of Bush to say this after all the information has come out about how the Intell community and Intell itself was browbeaten, twisted, hyped, spun and etc. by people like Cheney and etc. precisely so as to "confirm" the presence of WMD, not to mention Saddam's alleged willingness and ability to use them and etc.

Bush apparently still doesn't have a clue about what was done in his own name right under his own nose.

Kind of reminds one of the haplessness of Nicholas II of Russia.

Cheers,
