Are we so averse to free trade that we are willing to resort to Soviet-style protectionism and punish consumers? That doesn't sound like the position of an "American conservative."

I love how it's "our" economic future.

How much of the auto industry will I end up owning?

Who is stupid enough to believe that being robbed is good for one's own economic future -- free-trader or not?

Mr. Buchanan, is your position that of an American conservative? You may not like free trade, but I certainly think it's preferable to Soviet-style protectionism.

We need to let the Rust Belt finish its slow collapse by sending the "Big" 3 car companies into bankruptcy reorganization. That way, we can get rid of the labor unions. Maybe the voters of those states will someday thank the Republicans for breaking the UAW's death grip on Detroit.

The Republicans lost the election because of their big government policies. Americans are rightly disgusted with the big government agenda of the Neo-Cons and the Christian Right. Until the Republicans purge those elements in their party that have implemented big government policies in the name of "limited government," America will remain under the total control of the Democrats.

If bailing out all of the industries listed by the author was immoral and unconstitutional, why is it that bailing out the auto industries is somehow moral and constitutional? Two or twenty wrongs still do not make a right.

Also, one has to wonder how the American auto industry could be considered "magnificent" and yet be on the brink of total bankruptcy, plagued with decades of imprudence and soon to suffer the just consequences of it. The statistics quoted are largely irrelevant to the universal moral and economic principles involved, because principles have never been determined by a majority vote.

If one is concerned about the impact the bankruptcy of American automakers would have on employees, pensioners, and their families, then one should start a private charity to be funded by the truly sympathetic. The federal government has no money to give to the families of autoworkers that it does not forcibly take from other working families via taxes, borrowing, and/or monetary inflation which devalues the currency.

Better yet, let's see a new American car company arise from the ashes of the current three like a phoenix, a company that actually produces quality vehicles that can compete with the cars of foreign autoworkers on more than just price. That would be the best thing to happen for all parties involved. Perhaps, such a new company would be wise enough to not get forced into unsustainable positions by the unions this time around, too.
