Probably not where she expected it. The feminist author retweeted a post saying that this New York Times piece by Susan Straight, “Making Babies, Just to Make Ends Meet,” was The Handmaid’s Tale “only on the open market.” Surrogacy is in part a government creation, of course–it’s about who has the legal right to a child born of a surrogate, which isn’t something the “market” can decide on its own. But really I just wanted to point you toward Straight’s piece, which is quite good, and another example of bourgeois family life as the province of the upper class.
