Josh Pathashnik at The Plank believes that this now infamous appearance of radio talk-show host Kevin James on Hardball doesn’t enlighten or enrich public discourse. I disagree slightly. James is just doing badly what some of the Fox News All Stars* do with some aplomb: using charge ideological words in a way to cancel thought. James, and (I’m sad to say) many conservative pundits spit the word “appeaser” in the same way sectarian communists used to say “capitalist” or “fascist”. I’m happy to see them exposed.

My favorite part of the exchange is when Matthews begins to insist on an answer and, like a seventh grader who didn’t study for the test, James tries to say, “He did what he did the way he did it! And that’s how it was done”:

JAMES: Neville Chamberlain was an appeaser, Chris. Neville Chamberlain…

MATTHEWS: What did he do?

JAMES: Neville Chamberlain was an appeaser, all right?

MATTHEWS: What did he do?

JAMES: Neville Chamberlain, his—but his policies, the things that Neville Chamberlain supported, all right energized, legitimized…

MATTHEWS: Just tell me what he did.

JAMES: … energized, legitimized, and made it easier for Hitler to advance in the ways that he advanced.
